Summertime and Outdoor Air Pollution 

Our website provides information on allergy and asthma topics for patients and their families.  The glossary explains commonly used terms associated with allergy or asthma.  Use our Links section to connect with major organizations that provide information, education, or services to allergy and asthma sufferers. Air pollution is an irritant and also increases your sensitivity to allergens, such as pollen or mold. 

Outdoor air pollution consists of particulate (haze, smoke, dust) and ground-level ozone (smog).  Ozone in the upper atmosphere shields from the sun's harmful rays, but ground-level ozone irritates the eyes, nose, and lungs.  Pollution and sunlight interact causing ozone to be worse in the afternoon and early evening hours, especially in high traffic areas.  The lack of rain increases particulate and ozone.  Air inversions trap pollutants near the ground.  NC Air Quality forecast

Information

Do you have an itchy runny nose; itching palate and throat; burning, tearing, and itching eyes?  You probably are suffering from hay fever.

Have you used nasal sprays, antihistamines, and decongestants without relief during the pollen season? 
You medication may need changing.  If you are using an over-the-counter nasal spray, such as Afrin®, it may be making you worse.  You can benefit from skin testing and allergy shots.

Is your nose still congested or your head hurting in spite of treating your hay fever? 
It could be sinusitis caused by a bacterial infection which needs antibiotics.

Allergic rhinitis or hay fever causes the nasal passages to swell which prevents the sinuses around your eyes and nose from draining properly.  Nasal allergies can lead to the complication of sinusitis.
We offer a sinus mini CT Scan in our office which helps us make a quick determination concerning sinus disease.
