Air pollution is an irritant and also
increases your sensitivity to allergens, such as pollen or mold.
Outdoor air pollution consists of
particulate (haze, smoke, dust) and ground-level ozone (smog).
Ozone in the upper atmosphere shields from the sun's harmful rays, but
ground-level ozone irritates the eyes, nose, and lungs. Pollution
and sunlight interact causing ozone to be worse in the afternoon and
early evening hours, especially in high traffic areas. The lack of
rain increases particulate and ozone. Air inversions trap
pollutants near the ground.
