Checklist on reducing dust-mite exposure

Have a non-allergic person clean thoroughly to remove household dust from bedroom.

Zip mattress and box spring in allergen impermeable encasement. (Encasements are also available for comforters)

Wash pillow(s) weekly in hot water or zip in allergen impermeable encasement.

Wash bedding weekly in hot water.

Wash frequently in hot water or remove stuffed animal from child’s bed or crib.

Remove upholstered furniture from bedroom; do not sleep on upholstered furniture or lie on carpet.

Control humidity by using air-conditioning or dehumidifier and discontinuing use of humidifiers. HAAC gives its patients specific instructions as to how and when to use humidification and these instructions are included in this issue of the newsletter.

Remove carpet in the bedroom and that laid on cement in rest of house, if possible.

Use HEPA room air cleaner if you use an air cleaner. This does not replace encasements.
